Trifolium repens subsp. macrorrhizum

(Boiss.) Ponert

⚠️ Taxonomic note: The Lebanese plant illustrated here agrees well with the traditional concept of Trifolium repens subsp. macrorrhizum, particularly in its dwarf, prostrate habit, small leaflets, white corolla, distinctly pubescent peduncle and sparsely hairy pedicels. It closely resembles material recently illustrated from Türkiye as T. repens var. macrorrhizum. The similar high-mountain subsp. orphanideum, recorded from Lebanon and Syria, differs chiefly in having a pale pink corolla and glabrous pedicels. Although current POWO distribution data do not include Lebanon within the range of subsp. macrorrhizum, the morphology of this population appears to support its identification as that taxon. Further study of Lebanese material, ideally including mature root systems and voucher specimens, would be desirable to confirm its status and distribution.
