About Me:

Welcome to floraFauna.life! My name is Ramy Maalouf, and I am the creator behind this archive. I'm a field naturalist, photographer, and independent researcher, with a deep parallel passion for music as a professional flutist, composer and inventor.

This website is my personal journey through the natural world; a space where I document and share the incredible biodiversity I encounter. Here, you'll find over 15,000 photographs and details of more than 2,000 species, captured during my fieldwork and travels across diverse landscapes. From the rich flora of Lebanon and the varied ecosystems of Spain and Brazil, to discoveries in Romania, Algeria, Greece (the Ionian Islands), and the unique desert beauty of Al Ula in Saudi Arabia, floraFauna.life is a living record of these experiences.

My approach to nature is a blend of scientific rigor and artistic expression. While I don't hold a formal degree in botany, I practice systematic observation, documentation, and collaboration with professional scientists. My fieldwork and data have contributed to peer-reviewed publications in journals like Flora Mediterranea and Palaeoentomology, focusing on areas such as rare orchid populations and the fascinating world of fossil insects in Lebanese amber. Through my lens, I aim not just to record, but to tell the stories of these species and habitats, blending scientific detail with aesthetic narrative.

Beyond the field and the camera, music is central to my life. As a flutist trained in musicology, I specialize in Levantine and Arabic microtonal music. I've developed unique techniques and fingering charts to bring these rich musical traditions to the classical flute, and I even hold patents for innovative instrument designs, including an adjustable extension for microtonal tuning and headjoints that capture the sound of traditional Middle Eastern reed instruments.

My background as a Lebanese-Spanish individual, fluent in multiple languages, fuels my perspective and my collaborations across continents. Whether I'm tracking a rare plant, improvising a melody, or capturing a landscape, my work is united by a deep commitment to preserving the beauty and diversity of both the natural world and human culture.

As the motto I live by says: “Observe with a researcher’s eye, create with a musician’s ear, and tell stories with light.”

Thank you for visiting floraFauna.life. If you share a passion for nature, photography, music, or have any questions or ideas for collaboration, please feel free to get in touch through this page. I look forward to connecting with you!
