• Life-form & habit: Robust perennial, 50–150 cm tall, glabrous except for pedicels; roots fibrous; stems quadrangular or winged at least toward the base of the petioles.
• Leaves: Ovate-oblong, rounded or cordate at base, serrate-dentate.
• Inflorescence & flowers: Inflorescence a nearly leafless panicle; pedicels slightly glandular, longer than the calyx, not exceeding 1 cm. Calyx lobes suborbicular, with a narrow scarious margin. Corolla green to green-brown, small, 2–7 mm. Staminode variable, from retuse to narrowly elliptic, often emarginate at the apex.
• Fruit: Capsule ovoid, twice as long as the calyx, acute at the apex.
• Phenology: Flowers spring to summer.
• Habitat & elevation: Moist habitats, ditch margins, and other humid places.
• Lebanese distribution: Pont du Pacha, Beit Méri, Metn, Ghazir, Chahtoul (records cited by Mouterde under S. umbrosa).
• Native range: Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and Anatolia (Turkey).
