• Life-form & habit: Biennial or perennial plant, 20–60 cm tall, somewhat woody at the base, branching low down with long, largely bare flowering stems.
• Leaves: Mostly grouped at the base and covered with short, appressed hairs. The lowest may be undivided; others are pinnately divided into broadly linear, crenate lobes, becoming narrower and almost hairless upwards.
• Inflorescence & flowers: Small heads 1–2 cm across, with bracts shorter than the flowers. Corollas lilac, long-tubed and only slightly radiating.
• Fruit: The surrounding involucel has eight ribs and eight grooves along its tube, without pits, and a very short crown. The calyx awns are two to three times longer than the crown.
• Phenology: July–September.
• Habitat & elevation: Mountain slopes.
• Lebanese distribution: Jabal Kneisse, Sannine, Hasroun and Yammoune–Dimane. Sannine is also represented in the recorded locations.
• Syrian distribution: Slenfe and Jabal Mattai.
• Native range: Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Lebanon-Syria, NW. Balkan Pen., Türkiye, Türkiye-in-Europe.
