Description

Life-form & habit: Small annual herb, 5–20 cm tall, described by Mouterde within Parentucellia latifolia.

Leaves: Stalkless, about 1 cm long, ovate to ovate-oblong; lower leaves crenate, upper leaves almost palmately divided.

Inflorescence & flowers: An initially ovate spike becomes elongated and interrupted below. Calyx teeth oblong and shorter than the tube. Corolla 8–10 mm long and sulphur-yellow in var. flaviflora; anthers hairless.

Flowering and habitat

Phenology: April–May in Mouterde's treatment.

Habitat & elevation: More or less damp places.

Distribution

Lebanese distribution: Mouterde explicitly notes var. flaviflora growing with purple-flowered plants at Bchela above Jbail. Also recorded at Sannine and Bqaatouta.

Native range: Cyprus, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Lebanon-Syria, Palestine, Tadzhikistan, Turkmenistan, Türkiye, Uzbekistan.

⚠️ Taxonomic note:

Mouterde treats this taxon as Parentucellia latifolia var. flaviflora Boiss.; Kew accepts it at species rank as P. flaviflora (Boiss.) Nevski and lists Eufragia latifolia var. flaviflora Boiss. among its synonyms. Mouterde's wider locality list combines several flower-colour forms of P. latifolia and is not assigned here wholesale to P. flaviflora.
