• Life-form & habit : Perennial herb, 50–150 cm tall, covered with a fine, short, white, crisped pubescence; stem erect, with few opposite branches.
• Leaves : Leaves mostly trisect, serrate along the margin; segments lanceolate-acuminate and attenuate at the base. In Mouterde’s area, var. syriacum has ovate-lanceolate or ovate segments, more shortly attenuate at base, while var. indivisum has all leaves undivided, obovate-oblong, shortly attenuate or rounded at base.
• Inflorescence & flowers : Inflorescence branched, arranged in corymbs made of shortly pedunculate capitula 4–6 mm long; involucre of short bracts, scarcely one-nerved, rounded-obtuse at the apex; florets 5–6, blue-violet, far exceeding the involucre.
• Fruit : Achene ribbed, surmounted by a uniseriate hairy pappus; these characters are given by Mouterde for the genus.
• Phenology : Flowers from August to November.
• Habitat & elevation : Humid places, from the coastal belt to the lower and middle mountain belts, and locally on the eastern slope of Lebanon.
• Lebanese distribution : Recorded by Mouterde from Saïda, Beyrouth, Nahr Beyrouth, Nahr Ibrahim, Tripoli, Ghazir, ‘Abey, Souq-el-Gharb, ‘Aïn Zehalta, Jbaa, Nahr Safa, Bcharré, Bân, Dimane and Saghbine.
• Native range : Albania, Algeria, Austria, Baleares, Baltic States, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Central European Russia, Corse, Cyprus, Czechia-Slovakia, Denmark, East Aegean Is., East European Russia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Iran, Iraq, Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, Krym, Lebanon-Syria, Morocco, Netherlands, North Caucasus, Northwest European Russia, Norway, NW. Balkan Pen., Palestine, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sardegna, Sicilia, South European Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Transcaucasus, Turkmenistan, Türkiye, Türkiye-in-Europe, Ukraine, Uzbekistan.
