• Diagnostic remarks : Mouterde did not recognize a separate var. alba, since the Lebanese material of Dianthus micranthus is already described as having a white petal blade, reddish beneath. However, field observations suggest that the white-flowered Lebanese plants may represent a distinct taxonomic entity rather than a simple colour variety; this requires further comparative study of morphology, ecology and population-level variation.
