  • Life-form & habit: Woody liana up to 10 m, climbing by means of its petioles; trunk with grey to blackish fibrous bark; branches ridged, green for a long time, glabrous except at the nodes.

  • Leaves: Mostly bi- to tripinnate, rarely simply pinnate; divisions long-petiolulate; leaflets oval to lanceolate (or linear in var. maritima), entire or 2–3-lobed, obtuse at base, tapering at apex; slightly hairy when young.

  • Inflorescence & flowers: Terminal and axillary paniculate cymes; flowers white, fragrant, 10–35 mm in diameter.

  • Sepals: 4, spreading, 4–18 mm long, white on both sides, pubescent externally, glabrous internally, with 3–7 nerves.

  • Stamens: Exceeding the sepals; anthers yellow.

  • Fruit: Brown achenes, compressed-ovate, sessile at base, abruptly narrowed at apex, with a feathery persistent style up to 2 cm long.

  • Phenology: Flowers from April to August.

  • Habitat & elevation: Hedgerows, woodlands, and bushes.

  • Lebanese distribution: Ct. Beirut, Nahr-el-Mott, Tripoli; Mi. ‘Abey, Jamhour, Deir-el-Qamar, ‘Amchit, Rayfoun, Bilhas; Mm. Ehden, Qannoubine.

  • Syrian distribution: Sud. Banias; NLatt. Kessab.

  • Native range: Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Baleares, Bulgaria, Corse, France, Greece, Iran, Italy, Lebanon-Syria, Libya, Morocco, NW. Balkan Pen., Pakistan, Palestine, Portugal, Sardegna, Sicilia, Spain, Transcaucasus, Tunisia, Türkey, Türkey-in-Europe. (KEW)
