Life-form & habit: Deep-rooted perennial with erect, wiry, highly branched stems, up to or exceeding 1 m in height; foliage sparse or mostly absent at flowering stage.
Leaves: Basal leaves toothed, attenuate into a petiole; cauline leaves lanceolate to linear, entire.
Inflorescence & flowers: Capitula solitary or in clusters of 2–5, axillary and terminal, subsessile, each with 7–12 florets.
Bracts: Involucellar bracts ovate, short; involucral bracts linear, sparsely puberulent.
Fruit: Achenes cylindro-prismatic, slightly narrowed at base, marked by 5 ribs and furrows, upper portion muricate.
Pappus: Scales lanceolate, forming a spreading crown; beak as long as or half the length of the achene body.
Phenology: Flowers from July to October.
Habitat & elevation: Gardens, sandy soils, and disturbed places.
Lebanese distribution: Ct. Beirut, Tripoli; Mi. Bikfaya, Ehmej, Qrayé; Mm. Dimane; Met. Ksara, Zahlé; Hem. road from Yanta to Aita Foukhar.
Syrian distribution: NLatt. Cassius; A.L. Yabroud; Dam. ‘Aqbet et-Tin, Mayssaloun, W of Damascus; J.D. Chahba, Tell Ahmar; Herm. ‘Aïn ech-Chara, Arné.
