  • Life-form & habit: Perennial fern with a thick, oblique rhizome.

  • Leaves: Dimorphic; sterile fronds 15–30 cm long, erect-spreading, subcoriaceous, persistent, pinnatisect with broad, often confluent, lanceolate, entire pinnae.

  • Fertile fronds: Erect, central, fewer in number, long-petiolate, longer than sterile fronds, with linear, alternate, spaced pinnae densely covered on their inner surface with confluent sori, except at the apex.

  • Sori: Linear, lateral, with continuous indusia on the inner surface of fertile pinnae.

  • Phenology: Fructifies in summer.

  • Habitat & elevation: Calcifuge and hydrophilous, found in cool, moist habitats.

  • Lebanese distribution: Mi. Broummana, Salima, Bikfaya, Ghoueir, Mayrouba, Qrayé; Mm. Col de Zahlé, Bân.

  • Native range: Alaska, Albania, Algeria, Austria, Azores, Baltic States, Belgium, British Columbia, Bulgaria, California, Canary Is., Corse, Czechia-Slovakia, Denmark, Finland, France, Føroyar, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Idaho, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kriti, Lebanon-Syria, Madeira, Morocco, Netherlands, North Caucasus, Northwest European Russia, Norway, NW.
