Life-form & habit: Erect annual 20–50 cm tall, covered with fine appressed pubescence mixed with short bristles and tubercles on some leaves; stems branched and paniculated.
Leaves: Oblong-lanceolate, sinuate-dentate, somewhat undulate; upper floral leaves ovate-cordate or briefly lanceolate.
Inflorescence & flowers: Cymes erect, later lax; pedicels shorter than calyx, nodding post-anthesis. Calyx divided halfway into lanceolate, somewhat obtuse lobes; accrescent in fruit. Corolla bluish-violet to purplish, with a tube exceeding the calyx. Scales ovate, velvety.
Fruit: Nucules curved, ovate, rugose-tuberculate, especially on one side.
Phenology: Flowers from February to June.
Habitat & elevation: Stony ground from the coastal littoral to high montane zones.
Lebanese distribution: Saïda, Bir Hassan, Aouza’i, Baie Saint-Élie, Tripoli, Beirut (incl. Nahr Beyrouth), Jabal Terbol, Tlail, ‘Andkett, Col de Machghara, Khan Sannine, Dahr-el-Baïdar, ‘Aïn Zehalta, Neba’ Succar, Ehden, Hasroun, Qannoubine, Cèdres de Hadeth, Ehmej, Monts du ‘Akkar, Ibl-es-Saki, Khan Mourad.
Native range : Italy, Sicily, and the Eastern Mediterranean
