Life-form & habit: Perennial with long-creeping rhizomes. Stems 10–90 cm tall, erect, rigid, glabrous.
Leaves: Shorter than stems, flat, distinctly keeled; margins and keel scabrous. Ligule oval, rounded; basal sheaths reddish-brown.
Inflorescence & flowers: 4–6 spikelets, often subcylindrical, dense-flowered, 2–3 cm long, spaced along the axis, pedunculate, erect or pendent.
Bracts: Leafy, erect; the lowest often exceeding the inflorescence.
Glumes: Reddish, with narrowly hyaline margins, single-nerved, greenish-yellow midvein, obtuse or slightly acute to acuminate.
Utricles: Greenish with reddish-brown spots, becoming tawny or reddish-brown at maturity; ellipsoid to subovoid, with faint nerves and a very short beak.
Phenology: Flowers from March to June.
Habitat & elevation: Wooded or spring-moist habitats.
